Create a Family Home Intranet with Joomla!
Joomla is well established as a robust platform for business sites. We've focused on using it primarily for small to medium business, blogging and some ecommerce, but what about using it at home?
Joomla! can also be used as an intranet
Where: Detroit Zoo, Ford Education Studios (second floor)
When: May 13, 2014 @ 7pm
Details: This meetup is FREE to all. As this is an afterhours private event, entrance into the Zoo will also be free. Directions will be sent out on Monday, May 12 by noon.
During this meetup, We will setup a Joomla site designed to be used at home by all your family members as a central location for communications, important documents and tasks. The way we will set this up will also allow you to use this as a home-based business intranet as well. Here's the complete list that we'll be going over:
- Setting up a spare computer to run Joomla! (or one that stays on all the time)
- Set up the network for internal only access (on your home network only)
- Alternately setting up the network for external access as well (away from your home network)
- Installing Joomla for family use
- Configuring Joomla as a family / home business intranet
- Extensions you might want to have to make things work even better
I have a Joomla intranet at home, and to give you an idea of how one might be setup, I have a spare 15" laptop that was just collecting dust. It is a Dell 700M that sports a 2gHz Pentium M Processor and 2GB of RAM (I upgraded it from 1GB) from 2004 that is currently tasked with the intranet.
The Joomla site serves both a family purpose as well as business related. For the family, my Wife and post important dates, things to remember and such, and since it is not accessible outside the network, we also use it to put important infomation concerning bills and account information.
When I log into the site, I also get an added menu that only I see that is for business. It has my contacts, projects, tasks and so on. My wife has access to a category I created for billing as she takes care of the financials, but since she doesn't need (or want) to know what I have to do for each project, she doesn't see those menu items.
If you need a place to keep all your family info, but is safe from the internet, come to this meetup!
