How to Install and Configure Joomla! 3.1 on CloudAccess.net

Workshop: "Learn how to setup and configure a new Joomla website on CloudAccess.net"

ca-jpgThis Introduction level "Workshop" style meetup is targeted towards anyone with an interest in starting up their own website. Joomla is an award-winning content management system (CMS), which enables you to build Web sites and powerful online applications, and we will take you through the install process plus a tour of the administration dashboard. You will become well aquainted with how to use Joomla quickly and effectively for fast website building projects.

Where: The Detroit Zoo Ford Education Center Studios (second floor)
When: October 2, 2013
Time: 7:00pm - 9:30pm
Who: Joomla User Group Orgainzer, Son Koral

This is a Beginner's Workshop

Workshop requirements:

Unlike most meetups, you will need to have a few things at a bare minimum to effectively get something out of this workshop.

  • WI-FI enabled Laptop (Mac/Win/Linux) is strongly recommended, but a Tablet (iOS/Android/Win) will do in a pinch.
  • Firefox or Chrome web browser loaded on to laptop
  • A VERY LARGE Cup of really strong Coffee (Just kidding!)

CloudAccess.net is the best Joomla Hosting company for any beginner. They make the installation extremely quick and easy, and provide excellent support as well as being our Platinum Hosting Sponsor. CloudAccess.net has been referred to a lot during the meetups and here on the website, but now it's time to see just how good they are (trust me on this).

We will guide you through a new Joomla setup on CloudAccess.net, explaining each step throughly and completely before moving to the next step. Don't worry -- the entire install takes you literally three clicks, and you can do this for as many websites as you need to build!

To speed things up, CloudAccess.net has generously given us demo sites to work with as a part of their "Joomla in a Classroom" Program! If you're a teacher, please consider incorporating this program into your lessons!

Once installed, we will log into the administration control panel (called "CPanel") for an in-depth tour of all the parts that make Joomla! work for you. During the tour, we will perform essential website configurations, again explaining each step as we go.

  • We will be installing and configuring extensions
  • Installing a site template
  • adding content and images
  • customizing site modules
  • embedding a YouTube video
  • Completing the site menu structure so you can keep building after the Workshop is done.

We will only have 2 1/2 hours to get all of this done, so please come prepared to get things done! We will be starting at 7 p.m. SHARP! While the meetup is 100% free to attend, you will be shown how to purchase web hosting with CloudAccess.net. We are building the sites on CloudAccess.net provided demo accounts which are fully functional accounts (Thank you CA!). You will be shown the option to upgrade the demo account to a paid account if you wish to keep the site (At the time of this meetup announcement, a CloudAccess.net Standard account is only $9.95/mo. - Please check the website for correct pricing)

Before coming to the meetup, please make sure to register for a new account if you think that you're going to want to keep your demo account. You will need to do this in order to upgrade the demo account to your own account. This will get you an account on the system before the meetup so that we do not have to spend the time registering everyone for an account that wants to keep their site. This is a simple and straightforward process, is like any other web signup.
