A Discussion about having a Holiday Party:
I'd really like to have a holiday party for all the Joomla User Group members and families. I would propose that we do a potluck style party for all members and their families on Saturday, December 7th 2013 from 2pm - 4pm at the Detroit Zoo. Please come with ideas for discussion prior to doing this workshop. If you cannot attend, please leave comments below with your ideas.

A few meetups ago, it was mentioned that you can run Joomla! from a USB Pen Drive, which is 100% correct. This month, we'll be doing just that. You will build your own portable installation of Joomla that you can take anywhere and run from any Windows Laptop or Desktop (and yes, even windows tablets). We'll look at how to do a portable installation on to the USB drive, configuration and finally running Joomla!

Having a portable copy is an excellent way to develop Joomla if you have to switch between multiple computers. We'll also show you how to access the Joomla site from other PCs on the network as well.

Workshop Synopsis:

Preparing your USB drive for Joomla!
We will be installing a portable webserver on your USB drive that enables you to run the Joomla CMS. There are certain configurations that we need to perform on the webserver, but they're really easy to do. We will also configure the MySQL database (also easy).

Installing Joomla! on the drive
We will install Joomla! on your USB drive. You can choose to install any version that you want, but we will probably install Joomla 3.1.5 during our tutorial. We will go throught the installation process and finally logging into your portable Joomla website!

You will need:

  • Windows Laptop running Windows XP or newer.
  • USB Drive - 512 is the absolute minimum. 8-16GB is recommended. Please bring a brand new one. I don't want you to accidentally wipe out exisiting files!

How to Install and Configure Joomla! 3.1 on CloudAccess.net

Workshop: "Learn how to setup and configure a new Joomla website on CloudAccess.net"

ca-jpgThis Introduction level "Workshop" style meetup is targeted towards anyone with an interest in starting up their own website. Joomla is an award-winning content management system (CMS), which enables you to build Web sites and powerful online applications, and we will take you through the install process plus a tour of the administration dashboard. You will become well aquainted with how to use Joomla quickly and effectively for fast website building projects.

Creating a Blog on your website can do wonders for Search Engine Optimization (SEO). There are hundreds of tutorials and articles about why, so suffice it to say that putting a blog on your website is pretty important! A blog helps your site connect with visitors, let them know what's going on, and allow them to interact (if you have comments and social media buttons... you have those turned on, right?) with your company.

Wordpress is the number one blogging platform in the world, and in fact, Matt Mullenwig will be keynoting the Joomla World Confrence in Boston this year too! It seemed only natural to have a meetup on how you can use Wordpress as the best blogging platform to blog while using Joomla! for content management. Problem most site owners face is how to seamlessly integrate the two. It's not very professional to have one style for your business site, and another for the blog on a seperate subdomain... We have the answer!
