Project Management for Web and Offline Projects

Please note that the meetup is on Tuesday night.

I'm really excited about this next meetup and here's why: I just came back from a two day training seminar on Project Management through a large national corporate training company. I learned a whole lot about how to manage projects better and I'm just chomping at the bit to share what I've learned to help you get things done the first time and on time.

While this isn't about Joomla specifically, it's addresses the broader goals you may have in any project and in life. I not only use what I've learned for my web projects, but in just about anything that I have a goal or deadline to meet.

In this meetup we'll be looking at tools and processes to help you manage everything, but focusing on project management for web development. Here's what we'll be going over:

• Brainstorming and Mindmapping

• Thought Organization

• Defining the Goals

• Breaking Down the Work (WBS)

• Creating the Project

• Definining Tasks

• Project Management tools (Free and Paid)

As always, this meetup is free, as is admission on to Zoo grounds for this after-hours event. We will be meeting in the Ford Education Center, second floor studios. All ages are welcome

How To Blog with Joomla!

Joomla for Personal Use

When: March 5, 2014 @ 7:00 p.m.
Where: Detroit Zoo, Ford Education Center Studios (Second floor)

Up to this point, we've been focusing on using Joomla! for business purposes, but how about something a little more personal? On March 5, 2014 at 7:00pm we will take Joomla and create a personal website designed for just you, and one of the best ways to use it is to set up a nice blog. Setting up a blog and using it will teach you almost everything that you need to know in order to administer Joomla websites.

What is Needed:
You might want to bring a Laptop. I will provide a Joomla site for every attendee that is good for five months for free, courtesy of our partners, CloudAccess.net! We will be in the studios on the second floor of the Ford Education Center.

The meetup (as always) is free to attend, and there is no admittance fee to get in to the Zoo for this private after-hours event. Directions to the Zoo and meetup spot will be emailed out on Monday, March 3, 2014.

Introduction to Joomla 2014

1 In the beginning, a developer setup a server and installed Joomla. 2 And Joomla was without content and menus, and lacked images and video. And the developer was in control of the server. 3 And the developer said "Let me make a Joomla Website", and it was created. 4 And the developer looked at the website, and it was good.

- Joomla 1:1

On Wednesday, February 5th, 2014, we will be back in the Ford Education Studios (second floor)  at the Detroit Zoo for a full screen, larger than life Introduction to Joomla to ring in the 2014 year! We did an introduction meetup last January in 2013, but there have been so many changes, and awesome things coming in the future, it's time to get acquainted (or re-acquaint) yourself with the Joomla Content Management System.

Learn the Joomla Basics

During this meetup, we will start from the basics. There are no pre-requisites other than to know how to surf the internet on your computer at home. Here's what we'll cover:

  • What is Joomla?
  • What can Joomla be used for?
  • How to Install Joomla
  • Tour of the Joomla Administration
  • Basic Global Configurations
  • How to write a Joomla Article
  • How to add an Image/Video to an article
  • How to create a menu
  • How to add a sidebar "module" to the homepage
  • How to install a theme
  • How to install a plugin
  • Joomla security and 2 factor authentication
  • Joomla SEO basics

Creating websites in Joomla can be done by just about anyone who has an interest in starting a website, and needs no special skills to get started.

Just to prove the point, I will build a Joomla website using my eight year old laptop and will not touch a single line of code!

I hope to show you that it can be done without expensive software or hardware. The laptop is an 2006 Acer 5507Z (Intel Pentium dual core, 2GB RAM, 15GB Hard Drive) that I bought for $150 from a friend who really wasn't kind to it.

Joomla Detroit is dedicated to helping you learn. We meet once a month at the Detroit Zoo in either the Ford Education Center or the Wildlife Interpretive Gallery Theater. Parents, we welcome teens with a keen interest in website development (building websites, not just Tweeting and Facebooking or taking "selfies"). Our meetups are free to attend and tons of fun! No prior knowledge needed, no assumptions made.

1st Annual Joomla Detroit Holiday Party at the Zoo

The holiday's are upon us, and its time to PARTY!

Join us on December 8, 2013 - 12 Noon to 3 p.m. for the first ever Joomla Detroit Holiday Party (at least I think it's the first ever...).

I did have to switch from December 7th to December 8th to accommodate those of us who have religious observances on Saturday.

Please follow the link and sign up to bring something. We will cater to both vegetarian and meat diets, and hopefully have an assortment of non-alcoholic drinks (Family including kids may come) and deserts!

As I mentioned above, please bring your families, friends and of course kids! You will also be permitted to enjoy the Zoo as our guests (six additional guests permitted per person, but keep in mind that we need enough food for everyone)!

I will send out an email on December 4th with an approximate number of attendees and how much food people have signed up for.

There won't be any presentations or agenda. It's just a time to socialize and get to know everyone!

Donations and Gifts

Donations that go to keeping the Meetup 100% Free are welcome!
