How to Get More Twitter Followers Fast!

One of the best ways to promote a blog, product or service is to use Twitter, among other social medias. In this post, I'll show you how you get more Twitter followers very quickly.

While this post is targeted towards Twitter users, the principals can be used for almost any social media.

Header EvaluationLets look at your profile. I will use one of my accounts as a demo. Here's how the profile page looks before we do the work. (@lowendboxed on Twitter)

  1. The icon is unappealing and bland as it's a stock vector image.
  2. What was I thinking with the description (bio) ??? It tells people what I do, but isn't gripping or interesting.
  3. How many times do I need to have "LowEndBoxed" in the header?

We need to really make things interesting for the end user. In a list of profiles, no one is going to notice my Twitter account. Additionally, many people actually read the bio (#2) before following or following back.

LEB-afterAfter 20 minutes work, here's what I did:

  1. I switched out the profile pic with a really bright red arrow and orange background. Bright colors catch people's eye, and make them take notice. Especially red for notices, and orange for clickable buttons. That's what I'm going for. In a twitter feed, I want people to instinctivly click my profile icon and follow me.
  2. I switched out the description to make it a lot more exciting. Saving money, low prices, best deal. A triple play that everyone is trained by the marketing industry to look for.
  3. I switched out the name from "Low End Boxed" to "Best VPS Coupons" just to reduce the number of times "Low End Boxed" appears on the header.
  4. For extra credit, I created a new header background. Babies have a soft spot with most people, and instinctively, people are drawn to cute ones! Also, the arrow now points to the information that I want to pound into people's head... I have the best VPS Deals anywhere (even if I don't, they'll remember that I do).

Now it's time to optimize the BIO! You already see two hashtags in the bio, so I'm currently associating my profile with those hashes. Here's what else I'm going to do:

I really want people to follow, so I added a nice arrow pointing to the follow button. I also added the text, "get the best vps coupons! follow us now!" in a "calvin and hobbes" font.

Notice how your eyes are guided around the profile header from the upper left to the right and then down to stop at the follow button? This wasn't an accident! Every thing I'm doing is to get them to click the Follow button!

LEB-opt-1

You wanna click it too, don't you?

The last thing that's really worth mentioning is that your Twitter bio should be changed on a regular basis to keep things fresh. You can also change your page and profile background often, but once you set the profile pic in the center (Your profile icon) DO NOT change this! This is how people will identify you in seconds. I changed it here for optimization purposes, which can be done in very rare cases. Not that I only had one follower as this is a brand new account, so changing the profile pic won't have a huge impact. I will not change this when I have 5 or more people adding me a day. until then, I'll be optimizing the image to get more notice!

How to SEO Your Website Content

SEO On Page Ranking Factors

optimize-seo-web-contentControllable On Page factors that affect search engine rank

One of the most controllable parts of SEO is your content. This simply is the article body, or content. The content in your page makes a very big difference, and this is not an area that you should take lightly.

Content keeps people coming back

While not a SEO factor, excellent content does bring people back to your website on it's own. If your content is chock full of what people need or want, they will be back to read more becuase you filled the need the first time around. Also origniality is a huge part of your site's success (also not an SEO factor). Both of these points go hand in hand for a successful site. The better the content, and the more original it is, the better your return visitor numbers should be.

Amount of content

The amount of content that you write on a page by page basis has a huge effect in the area when it comes to SEO. The more focused and relevant the text is, along with the amount that you've written about it are all factors. A good SEO'ed article is really no less than a 500 word article at the minimum. When creating an article for SEO purposes, I like to try and hit 1000-1500 words. It's not always possible, but it's good to have a goal in mind.

How to SEO Links on a Joomla! Site

How to SEO Web Links Joomla! Site

Today, I'm focusing on how to properly format and optimize links in Joomla for Search Engine Optimization (SEO). Linking is one of the most fundamental parts of any website and I'm going to show you how to optimize these links in Joomla!, but the formats hold true for any CMS or Blog platform.

There are two main types of links that are used on a website

External Links - Links that point to another domain (or subdomain). In essence, these links point outside of the website that you are creating the link in.

Internal Links - Links that point to other parts of the originating website, be it images, articles, videos or anything else under the same domain or subdomain and provided it's a part of the same site.

External Link SEO

As I said above, external links that point (or 'target') any other domain than the one the link has originated from ('source'). So if another website is linking to yours, this is considered their external link. If you setup a link on your website to Amazon.com, this is also an external link.

<a href="/http://www.external-domain-example.com/" title="Keyword Text">Anchor Text</a>

Tip: Using Keywords that accurately desctribe the link in the anchor text improves link SEO.

External links are extremely important source of ranking, coming in right after your Tile and Description SEO. External links by default pass 'link juice' differently than an internal link does, because search engines use them to establish relevancy to the page/site topic. It is unknown whether the title attribute is used for ranking purposes, but I still put them in there because when you hover over a link, you'll get the litte descriptive box that pops up with your title text.

How to Properly SEO Your Website Title and Description Tags

Writing the Title Tag and Description correctly is the most important (and easy) thing you have to do for Search Engine Optimization next to writing really good content!

The Title Tag

We all know how important a title is. Its the difference between PVT and GEN in the armed forces, Mr. and Dr. for medical professionals and for your website, its your brand name. People ususally use the company name for the title, but is this good to do? is there something better in terms of SEO that can be done to the title so that it helps you rank in the Search Engines?

In this blog post, we'll be looking at how to Optimize the website's title and description tags for SEO, so starting at the very beginning, the tile tag is populated in Joomla by what you enter in the global options for Site Title, and in the source code view. shows up as <title>Your Title</title>. Simply, it defines the title of the document, not the entire site.

Your Title Tag is the second most important "on-page" SEO element right behind overall content.

There are three places that the title show up, and this is key!
1. In the Browser top bar above the icons and menu.
2. As the title displayed in Search Results
3. External Websites that query the title tag for link title display (like socail media sites)

Now that you know how much importance there is surrounding the title tag, lets look at how to properly optimize your titles for the best chances at ranking higher.

When it comes to websites, titles, as a general rule of thumb, should be clear and consise. They have to tell people what the page is about, and do it in a very minimal way. In

On Page SEO for Beginners

Beginner On-Page SEO

Most people who put up websites on their own, such as small business owners and individuals that have great ideas, don't necessarily thing of Search Engine Optimization while building the website. Many of us are just learning, and have no idea what SEO is either.

I Have a Website, but where do I start with Search Engine Optimization?

SEO as a whole is a very daunting endeavor. It takes months to fully optimize a site on your own, and that's why the SEO companies do very good business. In this brief article, I just want to reiterate some of the points that I went over last month during our Joomla Detroit user group meeting.

Server Response

This is a critical part of web site building. Period. It is not an area to skimp and try and save a few pennies on. Choosing a "budget" host may save you a little, but if you happen to get a low power host, or one that goes down frequently, Google and Bing aren't going to give you the time of day. (Joomla Detroit is hosted on LiquidWeb.com, a Lansing-based Hosting company that's done really well for us!)

Website Speed

The faster your site loads is a factor with Google. If two sites were identical, but one loaded in two seconds, the other in four, you know which one would rank higher!

Interlinking

That is, links on your site in the content that point to other parts of the same site (not externally, to another site) Very important when building relevance and credibility (just look at Wikipedia... lots of links to other Wikipedia pages on every page). Loading two to four links in the first two paragraphs can carry a lot of weight!

Broken Links are Baaaaaad!!!

The search bots crawl your site and follow every visible link. You definitely do not want them arriving at an "Error 404" page or any other dead link. Google will detract 404's from your website's overall score. Check for error 404's using this tool: http://validator.w3.org/checklink or this: http://www.brokenlinkcheck.com/broken-links.php

Canonical URLs

Duplicate content is bad, especially if it's on the same site. The use of canonical tags is imperative to get rid of this problem, and Anything-Digital's "SH404SEF Extension" does this for you automatically: http://anything-digital.com

HTML Errors

Check for html errors, bad JavaScript and CSS. All of these can hurt your rank if done wrong. Check every post you create using the W3C markup validation service here: http://validator.w3.org/. Check CSS here: http://jigsaw.w3.org/css-validator/. Just type in the URL of the newly published post and see what needs to be fixed

Your UNIQUE Content still is King!

Having unique content, lots of it and updated frequently is going to be your best optimization! Every page you write has the potential to be the next big landing page that people see when searching. There are certain things that you have to watch out for, though:

Keyword in URL and Title

If I wanted to do better when people search "Baby Stroller with shock absorbers" I would definitely want to have the words "Baby stroller" and "Shock absorbers" in both the URL and Title. E.g.: "mydomain.com/category/best-baby-strollers-shock-absorbers" and the title: "5 Best Baby Strollers that have Shock Absorbers"

Related Keyword as the Category

Your category title should be closely related to the page and URL keywords. In the above example, I'd probably use "transportation" as my category.

Anchor Text for Links

Most CMS and blogs use your article title as the H1 header. If you make sure that your keywords are in the title, then they should be in the H1 tag by default as well (Joomla and Word press do this by default, but the functionality is Template dependent).

Images should have keywords in both filename and in the alt tag

Renaming your images with related words and your main keywords in the (alt="keyword here") alt tag also contribute to relevancy

Number of times Keywords show up in your article

It is a good rule of thumb that your keywords only show up as 3-5% of the total article content. You can also use related words and phrases to bolster your keywords.

Content above the fold

Having over 60% of the article content above the fold (the place where the screen cuts off the article on the bottom) is essential. If most of the article is below, consider shrinking your header image, logo or anything else that's pushing your content down!

In 2015, the Joomla structure team selected and implemented a transition team to improve the leadership structure and empower a stronger more unified strategy for the Joomla Project. This transition team originally composed of six members ended up as the responsibility of two people, Ken Crowder and TJ Baker. With the burden now on their shoulders, they carried the baton forward in building a thriving ecosystem with strong processes, community involvement, and a balance of power. I caught up with the two members of the transition team that co-lead the two-year process to ask them several questions about how the journey played out, what they learned, and how it changes the Joomla trajectory. Read below to learn what Ken & TJ had to say about the process.
